Our project goal

We understand genetic testing and counselling services in Ireland to be under-regulated, under-funded and fragmented which leads to many issues around availability and access to quality services.

The aims of this research project are to:

  • Review genetic testing and counselling services available in Ireland and compare them against best international practice.
  • Provide recommendations on improving service design and delivery together with a roadmap to improve the patients experience in finding answers to difficult questions.

Next Steps

Under our current strategy, we have a commitment to follow through on AHF funded research projects by supporting the implementation of study recommendations.

Next Steps:

  • The Research study yielded 8 recommendations across the full spectrum of current delivery of genetics in Ireland, which will be shared and promoted by the Adelaide Health Foundation
  • In response to the report findings, the Adelaide Health Foundation commit €1.5m to a 3-year programme to support improvements in Irish Genetic Testing & Counselling services.
  • During the three-year multi-phase project [2025-2027], AHF will be working in conjunction with national, academic and healthcare partners. to support projects which improve the patient experience.

Our project purpose

The purpose of the study is to improve our understanding of the health and wellbeing of the people of Tallaght, and the Tallaght community’s relationship with existing health, social and community services.  It will also provide insights for future health policy and planning. It is developed by a team in Trinity College Dublin, with other partners from the community

Project Background:

The Health Assets and Needs Assessment (HANA) project is a health survey within the Tallaght Community. The first survey began in 2001 looking at what health services Tallaght had available.  It had a second phase in 2013 looking at what services the community needed.

This health survey is now in its third round. It is funded by the Health Service Executive and the Adelaide Health Foundation. Other key stakeholders are Tallaght University Hospital, South Dublin County Council, and Childhood Development Initiative.

The survey will ask questions of the people living in Tallaght, relating to the existing health and community services in Tallaght and how they are used. It will also give important information about the needs of the community and what services can be improved in the area.

The results of the research will help shape health policies and assist in planning for Tallaght’s future health needs.

The aims of this research project are to:

  • Review and assess the health needs of Tallaght’s community and understand how the community interacts with existing health, social and community services and resources.
  • Shape health policies and health planning based on research findings for the Tallaght community.
